The rotary hook is the single most important part in any embroidery machine β it forms every stitch. But Tajima and Barudan hooks are not interchangeable, and understanding the differences helps you maintain your machines and buy the right replacement.
The rotary hook (also called the hook assembly or hook basket) is the part that catches the needle thread loop as the needle rises from the fabric. It carries the loop around the bobbin case, forming the lockstitch. It rotates at twice the speed of the needle β on a machine running at 1,000 stitches per minute, the hook rotates 2,000 times per minute.
Because it operates under constant high-speed friction, the hook tip wears over time. A worn or damaged hook causes thread breaks, skipped stitches, and shredded thread β the three most common embroidery machine complaints.

No. This is the most important thing to know. Tajima and Barudan hooks have different body dimensions, timing specifications, and hook basket geometries. Fitting a Tajima hook into a Barudan machine (or vice versa) will damage the machine and will not form stitches correctly.
Within each brand, there are also model-specific variations. For Tajima, the TMEF series uses a different hook assembly than the TFMX-IIC series. Always specify your exact machine model when ordering replacement hooks.
Both Tajima and Barudan manufacture their hooks to tight tolerances and similar material specifications. In independent testing by embroidery machine technicians, there is no statistically significant difference in lifespan between genuine OEM hooks from either brand under comparable operating conditions.
The real variable is whether the hook is genuine OEM or a compatible aftermarket copy. Compatible hooks cost 30β40% less but have wider manufacturing tolerances, which can lead to more frequent thread breaks and shorter service life β particularly with fine threads (60wt and above).
For high-volume production (8+ hours/day), genuine OEM hooks are worth the premium. For occasional or light use, quality compatibles are acceptable.
We supply genuine and compatible rotary hook assemblies for Tajima, Barudan, Juki, Brother, and SWF machines. Wholesale pricing is available for factories, distributors, and repair workshops.
