Bobbin thread is the bottom thread in an embroidery machine — it interlocks with the top (needle) thread to form each stitch. Most commercial embroidery machines use white 60wt polyester bobbin thread regardless of the top thread colour, as the bobbin thread is hidden on the underside of the fabric in normal embroidery. Black bobbin thread is used for dark fabrics where the back of the embroidery will be visible.
L type and M type refer to the bobbin case size. L type (also called Class 15 or standard) is the most common size used in Tajima, Barudan, SWF, and most commercial embroidery machines. M type is a larger industrial size used in certain Juki models. Always check your machine manual or existing bobbin to confirm which type your machine uses before ordering.
In continuous production, a standard pre-wound bobbin lasts approximately 30–60 minutes of running time depending on design density and stitch count. High-production factories typically load a new bobbin at the start of each design run or shift. Running out of bobbin thread mid-design causes tension issues and stitch quality problems.
Tajima machines accept standard L-type pre-wound bobbins and standard 60wt bobbin thread. The key spec is the bobbin case size (L type for most Tajima models) and thread weight (60wt). Avoid using thick embroidery thread (40wt) in the bobbin — it creates excessive tension and will damage the bobbin case spring over time.
